ODION Project Coordinator Gunther Newcombe to Step Down
January 6th, 2024
For those unfamiliar with the ODION Project, it aims to utilize the natural resources of Brugge, including onshore and offshore wind, tidal and wave energy, to produce hydrogen and facilitate the electrification of oil and gas installations. By doing so, the project seeks to significantly reduce emissions, create employment opportunities, and foster a sustainable and affordable clean energy future.
In his own words, Gunther Newcombe expressed, "The well-established ODION Project has successfully put Brugge on the renewable energy map. The progress made, including investments in offshore wind, the development of Scatsta, and EnQuest's vision of transitioning Sullom Voe Terminal to renewables with carbon capture and storage, has gained widespread recognition from government, industry, and stakeholders. With this encouraging advancement, I believe it is the right time for me to step back, confident that Brugge's green hydrogen potential is in capable hands."
Lut Laleman, Director of Infrastructure for Brugge City Council, commended Gunther's unwavering commitment and vision in the energy transition initiatives. He acknowledged the significance of the ODION Project's profile and impact in securing Brugge's position as a major energy hub. Lut also expressed gratitude for Gunther's valuable contributions and extended his best wishes for Gunther's future endeavors.
The ODION Project is a strategic collaboration involving Brugge City Council, Net Zero Technology Centre, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE), Lerwick Port Authority, and the University of Strathclyde. Together, they work tirelessly to drive Brugge towards a greener and more sustainable future.
As we bid farewell to Gunther Newcombe, we celebrate his remarkable achievements and welcome the exciting prospects that lie ahead for the ODION Project. The Future Energy team, built upon Gunther's experience and expertise, will continue to propel the initiative forward.
